In a scene straight out of the old-school days of the 50′s, actress Katherine Heigl fired up a smoke right on the set of The Late Show with David Letterman. How you ask can she get away with smoking indoors? Is it because she’s a celebrity and celebs can get away with anything they want? Not quite…it’s because she was smoking an electronic cigarette.
For those unfamiliar with electronic cigarettes, they are electronic devices that look very much like a traditional cigarette. However, instead of puffing on harmful tobacco, you smoke a water vapor – nicotine mixture that actually tastes quite good. Some brands are obviously better than others and I’m not a huge fan of the brand Heigl smokes on Letterman. So Letterman gives the e-cig a try on the air and said it makes him feel dizzy, which is fairly common for a non-smoker when puffing on nicotine.
The downside to electronic cigarettes? Well, they aren’t going to cure your addiction, although I personally quit smoking real cigarettes entirely with the help of e-cigs. Still, they are not approved as smoking cessation devices, but there seems to be a general consensus out there that they are significantly safer than real cigarettes.
The US has been trying to stop imports of electronic cigarettes because they want them to be regulated as smoking cessation devices – no doubt a political move pandering to the massively powerful tobacco lobbyists – so the cost of the devices has nowhere to go but up if the government decides to regulate them as smoking cessation products so it’s a great time to give one a shot.
If you’ve been following electronic cigarette news lately, you may have heard of the recent memo released by the FDA regarding the products. In the following editorial, which first appeared in the Washington Times on August 6, 2009, Dr. Elizabeth Whelan, President of the American Council on Science and Health explains why the FDA may be blindly pushing to ban e-cigs without just cause.
Thursday saw a major win for electronic cigarettes in the United States. A federal judge ordered the FDA to stop blocking the import of electronic cigarettes and, in his decision, indicated that electronic cigarettes should be regulated as tobacco products rather than drug delivery devices.
Recently, the FDA has come out with guns blazing against electronic cigarettes due to enormous pressure from anti-smoking groups who want to see any tobacco-related products banned from the market entirely. For nearly a year now, the FDA has been intercepting and seizing electronic cigarette shipments, claiming the devices are illegal because they do not yet have FDA approval.
Millions of products are sold each year in the United States without FDA approval, but where the FDA draws a distinction between those products and electronic cigarettes is that it claims electronic cigarettes are “drug delivery devices,” and those do have to have FDA approval before being sold.
The FDA has been in court for months now with a major electronic cigarette retailer battling over the issue. To be quite frank, with all the amazing things we’ve been hearing from people who have tried e-cigs, and the fact that I’ve personally quit smoking using the devices, I’ve been a bit worried that if the FDA won the case, I would no longer be able to purchase refills.
The Case
Major e-cig distributors have said that the vapor produced by electronic cigarettes contains virtually none of the cancer-causing agents found in traditional cigarettes, but the FDA has been fighting that claim, saying they have not been proven safe.
According the presiding judge in the case, “This case appears to be yet another example of F.D.A.’s aggressive efforts to regulate recreational tobacco products as drugs or devices,” and ruled that the agency cannot ban the devices.
Judge Leon said that the devices should be regulated in the same way as traditional cigarettes and agreed with the distributors that they were not marketed as stop smoking devices, but rather as an alternative to traditional smoking.
The atomizer is the workhorse of the electronic cigarette and is what is responsible for vaporizing the nicotine solution. Without the atomizer the electronic cigarette doesn’t function.
The atomizer is the smallest piece on the device and is usually hidden from view completely when completely assembled. On most brands the atomizer screws into the battery casing and then the nicotine cartridge slides over the top of the atomizer.
It has a small metal Wick that draw the solution out of the cartridge and then uses the battery to keep the liquid into a vapor. As soon as current begins to run to the atomizer, it starts to vaporize the liquid. Most modern electronic cigarettes are activated by a pressure switch that senses when you inhale, causing current to flow to the atomizer, vaporizing the nicotine solution as you take a drag. However, there are some brands out there that still use manual activation with the use of a button. There are some benefits to these, which I won’t get into right now, but for most people automatic activation is usually the way to go.
In the previous article I talked a little bit about how electronic cigarettes work. For the most part, they all work exactly the same, however there are just a few very minor differences.
Let’s start with the battery. The battery is located where the nicotine would be on a traditional smoke. It’s the largest part of the electronic cigarette and is used to power the atomizer, which vaporizes the nicotine solution into a vapor that you inhale. Almost every brand utilize rechargeable batteries; I think most of them are lithium-ion although I believe a few are nickel cadmium. Whatever type they are there rechargeable I know that.
Most brands have a small LED at the tip of the battery that lights up when you take a drag. Some brands are marketed as this light is used to distinguish the electronic cigarette from a traditional smoke in the event that someone sees you smoking indoors and tried to stop you. With a blue LED at the tip of the battery, it’s pretty easy explaining you’re not smoking a real cigarette, at which point the person should probably leave you alone and let you smoke since electronic cigarettes are not covered by smoking bans.
Some brands use a red orange LED at the tip of the battery and the market needs as stimulating the look of a real cigarette for those that may want to not draw attention to themselves while smoking the device in public.
Either way most of the batteries have a small LED at the tip that lights up when you take a drag.
Since electronic cigarettes are relatively new, some people are even aware of what they are exactly. That’s totally fine, and I wasn’t aware either until I did a good deal of research. One of think you’ll find his you look into electronic cigarettes is that they all function essentially the same way, or rather, they all function exactly the same way for the most part, the only real difference being the brand and the price.
Obviously, the brand makes a difference, especially with relatively new technology such as this. You want to make sure you purchase your electronic cigarette from a reputable manufacturer, someone with a good reputation, good customer service, and reliable product.
The other big factor to consider is the price. I’ve seen prices range anywhere from around $30 all the way up to $200 for a starter kit and for the most part there really isn’t much of a difference between any of them other than the brand name.
Surprisingly, however, some of the most reliable brands from reputable manufacturers actually aren’t the most expensive. What I found in my research is that most of the really expensive brands are from companies who think they can just selling overpriced product because they’re good at marketing or something like that. That may be the case, they may very well be selling a lot of these things, but I don’t know who’s buying them.
Anyway, enough about price and brand, let’s get onto how these things work and what they are exactly.
I’ll get into more detailed explanation of electronic cigarettes in the future, but for now let’s give you a short and sweet of it.
First of all, the goal of electronic cigarettes is to closely simulate the smoking a real cigarette. With that in mind, it makes sense that they produce smoke, or actually vapor, that you inhale just like the smoke from real cigarette, which delivers the nicotine to your lungs. The main difference between what you’re inhaling with electronic cigarette vs. a real cigarette is that an electronic cigarette produces a water vapor/nicotine mixture, which is what you inhale. The real benefit of this over real cigarettes is that you’re not inhaling actual smoke, or what’s known as byproducts of combustion, and for this reason they are considered by most to be dramatically more healthy than real cigarettes.
Now there is no tobacco an electronic cigarette. Instead, there is a nicotine solution in liquid form is held inside the cartridge. If you find you like electronic cigarettes and you continue to smoke them the cartridges are what you replace and you’ll end up reusing the rest of the device.
Now the goal of the electronic cigarette is to vaporize that nicotine solution from liquid form into a vapor, which you then inhale. This is accomplished with the use of something called an atomizer, which is really just a heating element that vaporizes the nicotine solution from the cartridges.
In order to power the atomizer, electronic cigarettes use a rechargeable battery.
All of this adds up to a package, at least nowadays, that looks very much like a real cigarette, it kept in plastic form rather than paper roll around tobacco.

I’ve got a lot of inquiries about the nicotine content of BluCigs, so here’s the info.

Non-nicotine: 0 mg
By comparison, the average cigarette contains anywhere from .7 to 1.4 mg nicotine. Obviously you’re not supposed to smoke the entire cartridge in one sitting.
